Yesterday evening English Heritage’s Chair spoke in a short debate in the House of Lords. Lord Renfrew of Kaimsthorn called for the debate to ask the Government how they will ensure that the wreck of HMS Victory, sunk in 1744, is not subjected to inappropriate commercial exploitation.

Might I bring your attention to the views of the actual descendants of Sir John Balchen, who died with his crew of over a 1000 men, on his flagship HMS Victory. The web site expresses our disgust at the commercial exploitation of the war grave and shows that Sir Robert Balchin, now Lord Lingfield (a senior conservative politician), to whom the wreck was gifted with his Maritime Heritage Foundation, is NOT as has been reported in the media, a descendant of the Admiral.
